The Tyśmienica Still Flows
This zine was made during the final session of Jess Goldman’s Understories workshop in January 2026. The text is a poem by Juliusz Wit, who lived in Borislav, the shtetl my maternal ancestors are from. I found the poem in a yizkor book which catalogs the lives and stories of the people of this shtetl, and I was drawn to the descriptions of the Jews who collected oil from the river.

מיקװה טחינה (Mikveh Tkhine)
This single-page zine is printed on vellum and hand-colored in a limited edition of 50 copies. Megaspora Press #13.
The back of each zine is printed with a piece of paper that was submerged in the ocean during a mikveh ceremony in 2024.
This zine is written in Yiddish, with translation support from Itamar Manoff and Corbin Allardice.
Mikveh Tkhine began as a poem, written after participating in a gender liberated version of a traditional mikveh, a Jewish ritual technology for purification, performed in a natural body of water (in this case the Salish Sea.)
The text reads “we see the world as we are / cold water of the ocean / exchange my particles / so that I may become a different person / who sees things differently.” Some time later, I illustrated the poem thinking the work was done. Only after deepening my studies of one of my ancestral languages, Yiddish, did I learn that women used to speak “tkhines” or prayers in Yiddish for doing daily tasks, since they were not allowed to speak Hebrew - only men spoke the language and it was for studying holy texts. I realized what I had written was a tkhine, and with support I developed a translation. Then upon my next ritual mikveh, I brought a piece of paper into the ocean with me to be transformed.
