Illustration for the month of Kislev, “A Great Miracle Happened Here”
The hand-drawn text reads אַ גָרױסער נס איז געשען דאָ, "a great miracle happened here" in Yiddish, a reference to the lettering/acronym on a dreidel. In Palestine-Israel each dreidel is inscribed with text "a great miracle happened here," in Hebrew, but on Turtle Island it reads “a great miracle happened there,” in remembrance of the rededication of the second temple. I repurposed this text to speak to the miracles we make in our diasporic homelands (!דױקײַט), and in the solidarity work that gives us hope as we struggle toward the liberation of all people, from wherever here is to Palestine.
Special thanks to Sasha Langford and Orev Reena Katz for facilitating the conversation that inspired this drawing.
